Mental Health and Effects of Meditation
Meditation as a science is like medicine. It is a spiritual science affecting physical anatomy, emotions, mind and spiritual consciousness for healthy and balanced living. A gradual evolutionary process brings Self realisation and Self actualisation. The ancient popular Indian art and science of meditation which lost its virtue once has regained heights of popularity globally in the recent past, in absence of an alternate.

Meditation has different meanings for different people, depending upon their level of exposure and spiritual development. Many are studying and practising it but few understand it well. It is an internal experience along with external forms and rituals.

Meditation can be a method for relaxing and releasing daily stress through breathing techniques. In its spiritual context, meditation is usually interpreted as a tool for Enlightment. It can also mean a ritual of concentration and inner awareness leading to spiritual expansion of Consciousness. Meditation can transform a very stressed and agitated person into a calm individual in a matter of 5 – 15 minutes! Thus, it is particularly useful for busy persons who lead stressful lives. Most of its forms help focus the mind to bring one pointed concentration for decision making and problem solving; therefore it is particularly effective for business people and leaders.

Meditation can train you to draw conclusion through the Law of Cause and Effect. Most people see life and everyday happenings on the surface, but the expert of “meditation for understanding” are able to penetrate the underlying principle and wisdom in any event. Those who meditate (Yogis) can extract the cause behind the known effects.
FORMS OF MEDITATION AS AN ART
There are four forms of meditation:
  • Relaxation
  • Mindfulness
  • Devotional
  • Channelling and invocative

Most of our ancient yogis did not have to demonstrate creative mental intelligence to be considered Holy, rather they were the devotional type who contemplated on the love and compassion aspects of life and served humanity. People who are very spiritual and psychically receptive and sensitive are naturally apt to meditate. They can use invocation or incantations as an initial tool to raise their vibrations to connect to invisible spiritual guides.

MEDITATION AND MENTAL HEALTH
Statement:-
If “Prevention is better than Cure,” than Dhyaana (meditation) and Yog (Yoga) are the easiest ways of preventing psychological problems.

Meditation has its effect on the physical and psychic aspects humans. If Yog makes the body fit then Dhyaana makes mind and soul healthy. There are increasing incidences and prevalence of psychological problems and psychiatric disorders in our modern society. Frustration, sleep problems, aggression, irritation, poor self control, drug addiction and suicide are common behavioural problems today but pharmacological treatment cannot be the answer to every problem.

Modern medicine systems have various biological theories to explain why and how these problems occur at anatomical and physiological levels inside the brain but none of these theories satisfactorily explain the mechanism of biological treatment. However, a known fact is that the cure of these problems has a definite connection with stress and the psycho-social surroundings of an individual.
Mental health problems are defined as deviation in thinking and behaviour of a person which is unusual to a person’s own personality or is unacceptable in the society. Mental health problem creates distress to the individual and their surroundings.

A relaxed and thoughtful mind is important for balanced thinking and making correct decisions. In other words, equilibrium of psychic energy is important for maintaining a person’s sane thinking, wishful behaviour and balanced emotions. Therefore it can well be interpolated that Dhyaana and Yog may have direct effect on mental health problems.

This meditation can be used as a technique to become a philosopher without formal academic schooling or to cultivate wisdom in life. “Vipashyana” is the mental health examination of the true nature of things that results in enlightened insight or illumination. It also helps to systematically develop and improve the intelligence of a person.
